Small Kitchen Renovation in Cape Town: Layout and Storage That Work

A small kitchen is not solved by adding cupboards everywhere. It needs a clear route for cooking, washing up and getting past an open oven or dishwasher. Before choosing finishes, map the things that frustrate you now: a fridge door that blocks a passage, a corner you cannot reach, or nowhere to set down groceries. The right brief starts with those daily moments, not a photograph of a bigger room.

This guide is about fitting better function into the existing footprint. If your first question is what the full renovation might cost, use our separate Cape Town kitchen renovation cost guide. For layout and joinery options, see the kitchen renovation service.

Measure the Room Before Choosing a Layout

Draw the walls, door swings, window sills and existing water, waste and power points. Mark any boxed-in pipes, columns or uneven corners. Measure your actual fridge, oven and dishwasher, including how far doors project when open. Then mark where a person needs to stand to load, chop and wash up. A cabinet run that fits on paper can still fail when two adjacent doors cannot open together.

Photograph the room from each corner and list the items you need to store. Separate everyday pots, groceries and crockery from things used occasionally. This inventory helps decide whether a taller pantry, wider drawers or fewer but more useful units will serve you better. Ask the designer to show door clearances and appliance dimensions on a scaled plan before cabinetry is ordered.

Choose a Layout Around the Route You Actually Use

Galley: Two Runs, One Clear Passage

A galley can keep preparation, cooking and cleaning close together when there is enough room between the facing runs. Test it with oven and dishwasher doors open, not just closed. If the room is a route to the back door, put frequently used drawers where they will not obstruct people walking through. Where two full-depth runs pinch the passage, one shallower storage run may be more useful than a crowded pair.

L-Shape: Protect the Corner

An L-shape frees one side of the room for a table or circulation. The corner cabinet is its main decision: specify how you will access it, rather than accepting a deep void you cannot reach. Consider using the most accessible run for preparation and placing a tall fridge or pantry away from the best daylight and worktop space.

Single Wall: Prioritise Landing Space

A single-wall arrangement suits a narrow room or a kitchen that shares space with a living area. It needs a useful stretch of counter for setting down food and moving between sink and hob. If every centimetre is occupied by tall units or appliances, the plan may look tidy but leave no working surface. A movable table can add flexibility, provided it does not block the main route.

Build Storage Around What You Own

  • Use drawers for heavy everyday cookware where you can see contents from above; check the drawer load rating with the joinery supplier.
  • Place everyday crockery near the dishwasher or drying area, so unloading does not cross the cooking zone.
  • Reserve one reachable pantry area for groceries; do not trade all accessible shelving for high cupboards.
  • Plan bins, cleaning products and recycling around the sink and door swings before choosing cabinet internals.
  • Mock up any pull-out or corner fitting with its full opening path; hardware consumes space too.

Open shelving can keep a small room visually light, but it also puts the contents on display and close to cooking residue. Use it for things you can comfortably clean, not as a default replacement for closed storage. Matching cabinet and wall colours may make the room feel calmer, but the layout still needs to work when every drawer is in use.

Check Light, Extraction and Services Early

Decide where task lighting is needed before the ceiling and cabinetry are fixed. Consider how cooking vapour will be extracted, where the duct could run and whether the selected appliance suits that route. New sockets, plumbing or gas connections belong in the coordinated scope, not as an afterthought once units arrive. If a proposed change affects a wall or opening, seek qualified structural assessment and check City of Cape Town approval requirements for the actual property before work starts.

Make the Quote Compare the Same Design

Ask for a drawing showing appliance models, cabinet sizes, drawer types, worktop junctions, lighting and the items to remain. Clarify who makes good floors and walls after old units come out, and which services or finishes are excluded. A quote based only on a rough sketch may conceal very different storage specifications. The olive-green kitchen project offers a real example of Happy Home's kitchen work, not a promise that the same layout will suit a smaller home.

Small Kitchen Renovation FAQ

Should I add an island to a small kitchen?
Only if the scaled plan still allows comfortable movement and appliance doors to open. A peninsula or movable table may be a better use of limited floor space.

Can I keep existing plumbing positions?
Often that is worth exploring before redesigning the entire room, but the existing connections and their condition need checking on site. Let the workflow, not only the pipe position, guide the final plan.

What should I send for a first discussion?
Share room measurements, photos, appliance models and your biggest storage frustrations. Request a kitchen renovation quote with those details so the scope can be discussed around your actual space.
